Why is there only 21 million Bitcoin?

I've often heard that there will only ever be 21 million Bitcoins in existence. What's the reason for this limit? Is it a technical constraint, or is it a deliberate design choice? Won't this limitation stifle the growth of Bitcoin as a currency? Won't the value of Bitcoin skyrocket as the supply dwindles? And what impact will this have on the overall cryptocurrency market? I'm really curious about these questions and would appreciate it if you could shed some light on them for me. Why is there only 21 million Bitcoin?
