What is generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG)?

Generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) WHAT IS GENERALIZED MYASTHENIA GRAVIS? meaning they produce specific antibodies (anti-AChR) that bind to signal receptors at the NMJ. This binding activates the complement system, causing the immune system to attack the NMJ. This leads to inflammation and to evaluate muscle function.

What is GMG & what causes it?

In gMG, this involves the creation of antibodies that interfere with signals between nerve cells and muscles. What sets all this in motion isn’t clear. As with other autoimmune conditions, it may be a combination of a genetic predisposition (a tendency to have a certain type of condition) and one or more environmental triggers.

What is a GMG treatment?

One of the newer gMG treatments is monoclonal antibodies, such as rituximab ( Rituxan) and eculizumab (Soliris). A healthcare professional will deliver these medications through an IV infusion. Monoclonal antibodies target specific components of the immune system to help suppress overactivity.

Is GMG hereditary?

No, gMG is not considered to be hereditary. In fact, it’s rare for more than one family member to have gMG, according to the advocacy group Conquer Myasthenia Gravis. With that said, gMG is an autoimmune disease, and it’s not unusual for several family members to have an autoimmune condition, even if they don’t all have the same condition.
