Why does Worldcoin scan the eye?

I'm a bit puzzled about Worldcoin's eye scanning feature. Could you explain why it's necessary? I understand that identity verification is crucial in the crypto world, but isn't there other ways to achieve that without scanning one's eyes? Isn't eye scanning somewhat intrusive and possibly prone to privacy concerns? And how secure is this scanning process? Couldn't it be fooled or hacked by sophisticated technology? I'd appreciate it if you could clear up these doubts for me. Why does Worldcoin scan the eye?
